Theodore Roosevelts Political Life Essays - Theodore Roosevelt
Theodore Roosevelts Political Life As a president Theodore Roosevelt was a strong leader and ruled with an iron fist. Not only did he conquer the frontier but he went on to conquer other countries. Roosevelt started out life as a born leader. When he was a child he overcame his sickness by physical exercise and rugged outdoor activities. He went to college at Harvard and after graduating he went straight into politics. Starting his career as the president of the New York Board of Police Commissioners, and later went on to Washington as an assistant secretary of the navy. Then he became a Rough Rider during the Spanish-American War. Afterwards, he returned home he went on to become the Governor of New York and Vice President of the United States in 1900. Roosevelt then became President in 1901 when William McKinley was assassinated. Roosevelt held office until 1908 where William Taft took his place. Roosevelt's main concern when he was a president was the rapid business consolidations taking place in the American economy. He and the Justice Department took on JP Morgan, the owner of Transcontinental Railroads. This case went all the way to the Supreme Court as Northern Securities v. US(1904). The court held that the stock transactions constituted an illegal combination in restraint of interstate commerce. Roosevelt was considered a trustbuster after that case. Later in 1906, in response to public pressure for greater government intervention into businesses, he and Congress passed the Hepburn Act. This Act says that railroads can only charge the amount that is set by the government, and that the government was able to inspect financial records. The Pure Food and Drug Act, which brought about the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) was next. This act says that all foods and drugs had to be tested and approved by a government official before they went onto the market. The Meat Inspe ction Act, empowered the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to inspect and label meat products. Roosevelt's concern with the destruction of the forest, prairies, streams, and wilderness led to putting the government in charge of the regulation of the environment with the start of the US Forest Service. Not only was Roosevelt a strong leader in the US, but he was also one of the most aggressive advocates of an overseas empire. Along with men such as Senator Henry Lodge, Admiral Alfred Mahan, and Brooks Adams, Roosevelt pushed for expansion. He not only wanted to free Cuba and the Philippines from Spanish rule and annexing Hawaii, he wanted to assert American military around the world. He also believed that the Protestants Anglo-American culture should be spread abroad. Roosevelt summarized his views with this quote, Speak softly and carry a big stick, you will go far. In wanting to build a canal across the Isthmus of Panama, Roosevelt's attempt to lease the ground was unsuccessful. He then came up with a new strategy: take over Panama. On November 3, 1903 it happened, and only for ten-million dollars. The positive effect of the canal was that it gave the US a tremendous strategic and commercial advantage. The negative effect of the canal was that the newly exposed areas needed to be policed. Roosevelt called for proper policing of the world. Roosevelt was concerned that Europe might try to take it if the US didn't. To prevent this proclaimed what came to be known as the Roosevelt Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine. The Document said that Chronic wrongdoing, or an importance which results in a general loosening of the ties of civilized society, the exercise of an international police power. Roosevelt also used this to justify armed intervention in the internal affairs of Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Mexico. Another thing that Roosevelt did that proved him strong not only in America but over seas was that he mediated a settlement of the Russia-Japanese War at Portsmouth, New Hampshire in 1905. In doing that he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1906. He showed his strength again in 1908 when he sent battleships to visit Japan in a muscle-flexing display of sea power. He did this because of the tension in California about the anti-Japanese racism. In the cartoon, Two

Making of The Maltese Falcon essays
Making of The Maltese Falcon essays The Maltese Falcon, a novel, was conceived and written by Dashiell Hammett. John Huston adhered closely to the original work when he wrote the screenplay for the film. He stayed true to its structure, chronology of events, characters, dialogue, and settings. On May 22, 1941, Hal B. Wallis, an executive producer at Warner Bros., sent the chief casting executive a memo. The memo pretty much instructed him to send Hustons screenplay to actor George Raft as soon as it was completed. Raft read the screenplay two days after Huston finished it. Raft disliked it and rejected it. He told Jack L. Warner that The Maltese Falcon was not an important picture and that he would not perform in anything but important pictures (Richardson 37). This statement wasnt completely unwarranted. Huston was an untested director and two other film versions of The Maltese Falcon had already bombed twice at the box office. Raft also had a bad experience when he played a part in The Glass Key, which was another film based on a novel by Hammett. Incidentally, there is a funny story about how Warner Bros. obtained the rights for The Maltese Falcon from the thirty-six-year-old Dashiell Hammett. Jacob Wilks son, ten-year-old Max Wilk, liked to read Black Mask magazine (free magazines were sent to the Wilk home in the hope that Jacob would find something he wanted to turn into a movie). One afternoon in 1929, Max Wilk sat down to read THE MALTESE FALCON, Chapter 1. Max was hooked and sped through the story until he was stopped cold by reading To be continued in our next issue (Sperber and Lax 149). Max told his father about the story and that he needed to know what happened. The next evening, Jacob Wilk, a Warner Bros. executive, told his son that hed called the Black Mask editor and asked for the rest of the story. But The Maltese Falcon almost did not fall into the hands of Warner Bros. Paramount briefl...

Cynognathus Facts and Figures
Cynognathus Facts and Figures Name: Cynognathus (Greek for dog jaw); pronounced sigh-NOG-nah-thus Habitat: Woodlands of South America, South Africa, and Antarctica Historical Period : Middle Triassic (245-230 million years ago) Size and Weight: About three feet long and 10-15 pounds Diet: Meat Distinguishing Characteristics: Dog-like appearance; possible hair and warm-blooded metabolism About Cynognathus One of the most fascinating of all prehistoric creatures, Cynognathus may have been the most mammalian of all the so-called mammal-like reptiles (technically known as therapsids) of the middleà Triassic period. Technically classified as a cynodont, or dog-toothed, therapsid, Cynognathus was a fast, fierce predator, much like a smaller, sleeker version of a modern wolf. Clearly it thrived in its evolutionary niche, since its remains have been discovered on no less than three continents, Africa, South America and Antarctica (which were all part of the giant landmass Pangea during the early Mesozoic Era). Given its wide distribution, you may be surprised to learn that the genus Cynognathus includes only one valid species, C. crateronotus, named by the English paleontologist Harry Seeley in 1895. However, in the century since its discovery, this therapsid has been known by no less than eight different genus names: besides Cynognathus, paleontologists have also referred to Cistecynodon, Cynidiognathus, Cynogomphius, Lycaenognathus, Lycochampsa, Nythosaurus and Karoomys! Further complicating matters (or simplifying them, depending on your perspective), Cynognathus is the only identified member of its taxonomic family, the cynognathidae. The most interesting thing about Cynognathus is that it possessed many features normally associated with the first prehistoric mammals (which evolved from therapsids tens of millions of years later, during the late Triassic period). Paleontologists believe Cynognathus sported a thick coat of hair and may have given birth to live young (rather than laying eggs, like most reptiles); we know for a fact that it possessed a very mammal-like diaphragm, which enabled it to breathe more efficiently. Most startlingly, evidence points to Cynognathus having a warm-blooded, mammalian metabolism, quite unlike most of the cold-blooded reptiles of its day.

Use of Information technology in education Essay
Use of Information technology in education - Essay Example The paper presents that there are several benefits that can be obtained from the use of Information technology in education presently. Generally, when we talk about IT we simply mean computers together with their networks; however, in this instance, we also mean some other technologies that help in moving information around from one region or place to another. While most academic institutions have their own systems and databases, there is a huge lake of linking these institutions which make it as islands of automation. This is because most of academic institutions often purchase systems to address its internal needs. Consequently, the academic institutions provide physical evidence of our achievements that everyone needs for further study or employment. Many academic institutions have always been in need of economical options for storing and maintaining information that might be essential or critical from a service viewpoint. Virtual vaults and even some other systems of security do not only store essential information but also enable control over the accessibility to such data. Adoption of IT security systems has appeared as the best and safest way as it helps in protecting virtual data from things such as wiping out or even hacking in the case of a technical hitch. However, even though IT has appeared as the best solution to problems that are related to the storage of information, we find that there are some instances that some illegal activities could emerge from these paper-based certificates; the paper is going to conceptualize these problems.... Now, we are going to focus on two illegal activities, which are forgery and identity fraud. 2.1.1 Forgery Forgery is a crime in which someone falsifies something with the intent to deceive. Unfortunately, the technology revolution makes creation of fake paper-based documents easier. In the present world, there are number of sites available on the Internet to issue fake degree certificates. It is a growing trade worldwide in counterfeit university degree certificates and academic transcripts, which in turn creates a potential damage to the universities and employment systems. In May 2004, an audit showed that around 463 employees in the federal government in the US had the fake academic degrees (Murthy, 2011). Forgery is defined in State v. Lutes,38 Wn.2d 475, 479, 230 P.2d 786 (1951), as "... the false making of an instrument, which purports on the face of it to be good and valid for the purposes for which it was created, with a design to defraud any person or persons....".( State v. Goranson,1965) 2.1.2 Identity fraud In some cases, while the paper-based certification is real, there is a potential illegal activity by using the right certification with the fake person. Identity fraud is described as: ââ¬ËThat someone with malicious intent consciously creates the semblance of an identity that does not belong to him or her, using the identity of someone else or of a non-existing personââ¬â¢ (Koops and Leenes, 2006). Identity fraud could be described functionally: ââ¬ËIdentity fraud arises when someone takes over a totally fictitious name or adopts the name of another person with or without their consent.ââ¬â¢ (Koops and Leenes, 2006). The fraud triangle theory (How fraud is likely to occur) The fraud triangle theory was developed by Cressey (1973), a

In each industry, technology determines industrial structure, which Essay
In each industry, technology determines industrial structure, which determines the conduct of firms, which in turn determines the performance of firms. Explain and critically evaluate this statement - Essay Example However the reflection of this relationship would be quite clearly evident in relation with the entityââ¬â¢s market performance. In a larger macroeconomic context, such technological changes are in a broader sense expected to make impacts in the economy my as well. The level to which technology would affect the performance of an industry is however heterogeneous. This would mean that the micro level response of various firms to technological innovations and policy changes would vary to a larger extent (Smith K ,1999). However while analysing the macro level relationship, an evident sign of linkage can be found between the industryââ¬â¢s performance in the global scenario and the technology. This linkage has been found in the history of any industry. To understand the relevance of this statement the replacement of many traditional hand driven industries with automated technologies would be an ideal example. Ranging from agriculture to oil mining, technology always has changed the face and structure of the specific industry as per the standards of the age. However it is true that there are many other factors which drive the technological innovations specific to each industry. From the experiences in the history, it is quite evident that technology would bring massive change in the industrial structure both generic and specific to individual firms. Along with the relation of the structural changes with the performance of individual firms, it also important to understand the integration of these individual changes into complex social and economic relationships with their environments (Smith K ,1999). There are number of theories explaining the macro effect of the structural changes in the industry in relation with technology. This theory is based on the disequlibrium growth model based on creative destruction. It clearly proves the relationship of performance and growth of the industry with the introduction of substantial changes in

Anouilhââ¬â¢s Tragedy and Oedipus Rex :: comparison compare contrast essays
Anouilhââ¬â¢s Tragedy and Oedipus Rex à Many definitions exist for the genres of ââ¬Å"tragedyâ⬠and ââ¬Å"melodrama.â⬠à Similar to the distinction between fruits and vegetables, most can tell the two apart but have difficulty describing why.à However, some definitions require a deeper look into a work, such as the interpretation provided by Anouilhââ¬â¢s movie version of ââ¬Å"Antigone.â⬠à Whether or not Sophoclesââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Oedipus Rexâ⬠is a tragedy or melodrama has been debated since the teachings of Aristotle and strong arguments have been made for both sides.à ââ¬Å"Tragedy,â⬠as defined by Anouilh, takes on a lifelike form, putting a new twist on an old definition that requires one to take a different perspective on the play.à Though at a superficial level ââ¬Å"Oedipus Rexâ⬠is a tragedy, its details point it towards the direction of a melodrama. à à à à à à à à à à à à The first and most glaring problem found while attempting to plug ââ¬Å"Oedipus Rexâ⬠into Anouilhââ¬â¢s description of tragedy comes with how tragedy runs in a play. à The spring is wound up tight.à It will uncoil of itself.à That is what is so convenient in tragedy.à The least little turn of the wrist will do the jobâ⬠¦. The rest is automatic.à You donââ¬â¢t need to lift a finger.à The machine is in perfect order; it has been oiled ever since time began, and it runs without friction (Anouilhââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Antigoneâ⬠). à Once tragedy has started to roll, it never ceases while continuing to snowball until the point of finality in the play.à In ââ¬Å"Oedipus Rex,â⬠this is not seen.à Rather, Oedipus himself works the machine, pulling each lever and pushing every button himself.à Though ââ¬Å"the godââ¬â¢s design is open, [and] all his oracle is clearâ⬠¦ (Sophocles 76),â⬠it is Oedipus himself that must hurry his fate.à The gods seem to hurry Oedipus along his journey as well, catalyzing the actions leading to Oedipusââ¬â¢s final revelations and self-mutilation.à ââ¬Å"Friends, it was Apollo, sprit of Apollo.à He made this evil fructify (Sophocles 73).â⬠à Oedipus recognizes that the gods, notably Apollo had ushered him along, leaving him with little else than to explore his origins and eventually go mad.à Oedipus is not put into some fate machine and chewed around.à Oedipus is subjected to his own curiosity and the play of his own gods. à à à à à à à à à à à à According to Anouilh, a tragedy must be very clean, whereas a melodrama is sloppy in nature. à Tragedy is clean; it is restful; it is flawless.

The notebook
The movie The Notebook brings forth a great amount of emotion and affection. This story, originally written by author Nicholas Sparks, follows a couple through the ups and downs of love. The great portion of the movie is a flashback looking into the lives of two young people smitten for each other. Even when distance and other lovers separate them, the two find their way back to each other. In this movie the theory that love conquers all proves to be a major theme. This movie, origianlly a novel, starts with the Noah (Ryan Gosling) and Allie (Rachel McAdams) in their late years. It becomes apparent that Allie suffers from Alzheimer's isease. Noah reads to her daily from a diary, but who he really is and show wrote the stories in this book remain unknown throughout most of the movie. It then flashes back to when they first met. They were teenagers at the time, and it did not take long for them to be inseparable and in love. Allie, coming from a wealthy family, was soon forbidden from d ating Noah. Her parents thought their daughter deserved someone better then a mineworker.Allie's family moves away from the town, and they do not contact each other for the few years that she is gone. During this time, Allie meets a soldier while she is a nurse during a war. Noah goes off to war, and he mother hides each and every one of them. Allie becomes engaged to her new boyfriend. Upon returning, home, she meets back up with Noah. Here, is where I find the most intense and important scene. Noah wants her back, and it is evident she feels the same way, but she now has a fiancà ©. After a long, grueling scene she goes back to her man, Noah.Throughout the entirety of the movie, it flashes back and forth between the past and the present. At the end of the movie, Noah tells Allie that the story he reads to her almost everyday is about their lives, and how they now have kids. She realizes she does not have long before she forgets this touching story, and so they enjoy the little ti me she has remembering that this man is the love of her life. In the end, they end up passing away together in the same bed, holding tight to each other and still very much in love.In this movie, and scene particularly, the depth and emotion brought forth conjures a specific type of audience. I think that this movie was made mostly for adults, and most commonly women. I am part of this group, so I believe that is why I find it so appealing. The writer and producer ahd to keep this in min when writing the movie because of course these wo young this scene dramatically because this is when they decide they want to be with no other person besides each other. This scene I chose stars off with Allie going to Noah's house after years of not seeing each other. As she starts to leave with an engagement ring on her finger from another man, Noah practically professes his love for her in a very tense way. The on-going question he asks is, ââ¬Å"What do you want? â⬠Allie repeatedly replies she does not know, but he does not even begin to take this as an answer. Once Allie exclaims she has to go, she leaves to go to the hotel where her fiancà © is staying. When she arrives, he can tell that she is under much stress.Being a very caring guy, he reminds her how much he loves her, as well as she does back, but he tells her he does not want to have to convince his finace to stay with him. Allie shows back up at Noah's house, and he knows at this point that she has come back forever. Throughout this scene, the producer shows the sexual tension between the two lovers. They set up the camera angle ot where only one person is seen at a time as they argue back and forth. Also, the way Allie has not moved far from her car shows how she is torn by being there and what she hould ultimately do.Impatience is heard in Noah's voice throughout this entire because she keeps telling him she does not want to upset anyone, even though he lust wants her to let him know what she wants, not anyone else. During this scene in the movie, there are many effects added to the movie to set the mood. This conversation between Allie and Noah happens as she is leaving in her car after an intense scene. She is hanging onto the door of her car, letting Noah know how timid she is about this whole situation. She might be trying to show the way she does not want to be confronted about this topic.
